Zoomlion fumigates Ga South communities against cholera outbreak

Zoomlion Ghana Limited, in collaboration with the Ga South Municipal Assembly has fumigated the communities recently hit by the cholera outbreak in the municipality in the Greater Accra Region.

This formed part of measures by the Municipal Health Directorate to prevent the spread of the disease to other parts of the region.

Four communities, Kokrobite, Bortianor, Oshiyie and Manhyean two weeks ago reported 9 cholera cases with three deaths within that period.

The Accra District Vector Control Supervisor of Zoomlion, Evans Nyakotey Doryumu, who disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times in an exclusive interview indicated that his outfit received a distress call from the Ga South Municipal Health Directorate of the outbreak in the four communities and quickly mobilised to the area to disinfect the affected communities.

He said the teams on October 26 started in the four communities after which they would move to Ashalaja and other adjoining communities in the Dome-Abrea Oboum areas.

Mr Doryumu stated that the fumigation teams targeted dump sites, public toilets, the households of the affected persons, bushy surroundings, the clinics where the affected cases were recorded and some mosques.

The Vector Control Supervisor who attributed the outbreak to the non-adherence to good hygiene practices said that apart from Kokrobite which had a dump site, the others did not have and thus the people engaged in haphazard dumping, posing serious health risk to the people.

Mr Doryumu urged the residents to adhere to best hygiene practices by constantly washing hands with soap and water after use of toilet, eat warm food and ensure to drink clean water.

He charged them to seek early medical treatment when they notice the symptoms before it escalates.

Mr Doryumu tasked the Municipal Health Directorate to intensify public education on the dangers of the disease, especially in schools where the children are most vulnerable.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) last month confirmed cases of cholera in the Ada West and Ada East districts of the Greater Accra Region, raising public health concerns.

The first confirmed case was reported on October 4, 2024, when a patient presented at a health facility with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. The individual had recently attended a funeral in Ada East.

Since then, a total of nine cholera cases had been confirmed in both Ada West and Ada East as of October 11, 2024.
