A tragic accident on Friday morning claimed the life of a woman at Kaase in Kumasi after a fuel tanker lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles.
The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. and involved a heavily loaded fuel tanker, a commercial passenger minibus (trotro), and a private car, all travelling uphill in the same direction.
Eyewitnesses said the tanker struggled to ascend the hill before suddenly rolling backward. It first collided with the private car, then crashed violently into the trotro, which was carrying several passengers.
Passengers in the minibus scrambled to safety, but tragedy struck when the woman, attempting to flee, was hit by the swinging door of the trotro and fell onto the road. Moments later, the tanker ran over her, killing her instantly.
Her body was left severely mangled.
Emergency responders, including police and personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, arrived promptly to secure the scene, control traffic, and prevent further accidents.
The victim’s body was taken to a nearby morgue, while investigations into the cause of the accident have commenced.
The incident has reignited concerns over road safety on steep stretches in Kumasi, where heavy-duty vehicles frequently struggle with mechanical failures or poor road conditions.
Local drivers have often complained about the risk posed by overloaded trucks on hilly roads.
Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and for transport operators to ensure vehicles are properly maintained, especially when navigating dangerous inclines.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by steep roads in the city and highlights the urgent need for stricter road safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
