2 miners jailed 40 days for stealing TV set

The Tarkwa District Magistrate Court One has sentenced two small scale miners to 20 days imprisonment in hard labour each for stealing a 32-inch LG television (TV) set valued at GH¢1,500.

Mr Charles Owusu Nsiah, who presided over the court, also imposed a fined of GH¢600 each on the convicts or in default three months imprisonment in hard labour each.

Theophilus Nyame and Lord Aidoo, who were both charged with conspiracy and stealing, pleaded guilty to the offence.

The prosecution, Sergeant Douglas Addae, told the court that Severin Mouity, a gold buyer, complainant, resided in Nsuaem together with the accused.

The court heard that the complainant received a distress call from his assistant (witness) that when he (assistant) visited the office at the Royal Midway Hotel in Nsuaem, he noticed that portion of the roofing of the building had been ripped off.

Sgt Addae said that when the witness opened the office, he realised that the LG television set, which was fixed in the office, had been stolen.

The prosecution said information was disseminated to residents of Nsuaem and its neighbouring communities to look out for suspects or anyone in possession of the LG television set.

Sgt Addae said the witness had a tip-off that Nyame was seen with the television.

The court heard that Nyame absconded but was arrested and handed over to the police, and during interrogation, he admitted the offence.

Sgt Addae said Nyame mentioned Aidoo as an accomplice and led the police to his room where the television set was retrieved.

The prosecution said when Aidoo was arrested, he confessed to the police that he assisted Nyame to carry the television to his room after it was stolen. — GNA
