Some irate residents of Kordiabe in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region have protested against the use of their land for the construction of a waste management system.
According to them, in their wisdom, the land in question had been zoned for the construction of a university and not otherwise, which they were not aware of.
Leading member of the protesters, Jason Ahua Micheal, said “it would really be disappointing if the government allows investors to build a waste management system on their property rather than a university.”
He was of the view that the area would pride itself in having a university which would serve the tertiary educational needs of students who apart from Accra, traveled to other regions for university education.
The protesters threatened to drive the investors away from their property if nothing was done to preserve their land.
In order not to fall foul of the law, they called on the government to intervene swiftly to ensure that their land was used for the intended purpose to the benefit of the people.
Commenting on the issue, Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo said the land had not been officially released to the developer by the chiefs of the area and as such, there had not been any community engagements to let the people know the kind of project and its benefit to the people.
She stated that if there was an intention for such a project to be constructed on the land, the chiefs had not released any land to the investors to warrant engagements and explanations to the residents what the project was about.
She stated that, the project, when properly communicated to the people in terms of the opportunities it presents, particularly employment, could rally their support just as the proposed university might present.
She assured to engage the District Chief Executive of the area and the chiefs to bring final and lasting solution to the matter.
