Imposition of presidential candidate alien in NPP -Boakye Agyarko
Boakye Agyarko, a former Minister of Energy, has cautioned the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against imposing a presidential candidate on the party as it prepares to elect a flagbearer to lead it into the 2024 elections.
He said the party had never accepted coronation or imposition, something he described as being against the DNA of the NPP.
“The NPP has a tradition of allowing delegates to elect a candidate of their choice and the contest between former President Agyekum Kufuor and then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he noted.
Leading figures of the party including former campaign manager Boakye Agyarko, Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, Alan Kyerematen, the Minister of Trade and Industry and Dr Afriyie Akoto, the Minister of Agriculture were gunning up to bear the flag of the party going into the 2024 polls.
According to Mr Agyarko, “the leadership of the party should go back to the beginning of our tradition, JB Danquah had to contest and he almost lost, Dr K. A Busia had to contest, Victor Owusu was contested by the likes of J.H Mensah and Dr. Kwame Sarfo Adu, Professor Adu Boahene was contested by the likes of Kwame Kodua, Agyekum Kufuor and Mr Kufuor was contested by Nana Akufo-Addo and was also contested by Mr Kyerematen”.
He called for the democratic processes to be respected to elect a credible and formidable presidential candidate for the NPP to break the 8-year political party cycle in 2024 and beyond up. –myjoyonline.com
