The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the death of a police officer who was allegedly attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.
The deceased officer, General Constable Redeemer Owusu, was attacked after a motorbike rider who had been found unconscious by a police patrol team died while being conveyed to hospital.
The Savannah Regional Police Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday explaining that preliminary investigations showed that the deceased officer and his colleagues were on highway patrol duties along the Gindabour to Kenkyen community road when they encountered the motorbike rider.
According to the statement, the rider, upon seeing the police vehicle, immediately diverted into the bush, prompting the officers to become suspicious and follow up from a different direction.
The officers subsequently found the rider unconscious on a bush road and picked him up to convey him to a hospital for medical attention.
However, the rider died while being transported to the hospital.
Following news of the death, a mob from the community allegedly attacked the police officers, resulting in the death of General Constable Owusu.
Other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack, while the police vehicle was also damaged.
The bodies of the deceased officer and the motorbike rider had since been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Following the incident, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) deployed a team of investigators and intelligence officers to assist with investigations and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, Kalba and the Regional Intelligence Team had also been deployed to the area to strengthen security and maintain law and order.
The 36 suspects were in police custody assisting with investigations and would be put before the court.
The Regional Police Command condemned the attack on its officers and assured that the perpetrators would face the full rigours of the law.
