The much anticipated exhibition bout between legendary Ghanaian boxer, Azumah Nelson, and the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Ichard Ramiandrasoa Razaaly, dubbed ‘Diplo Rumble’, was held on Saturday with a draw decision.
This was after three rounds of boxing on the night during which both entertained the crowd at the Bukom Boxing Arena with some exciting boxing skills and techniques.
The atmosphere was electrified when the ‘asembi re ba’ song was played to welcome Azumah into the boxing ring.
Before the main bout, fans were treated to some interesting bouts involving juvenile, youth, and elite amateur boxers from the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF).
Present at the bout were ambassadors from various countries, including Malta, representatives of the EU delegation to Ghana, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Benjamin Nunoo Mensah, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion, Joshua Clottey, members of the
GBF, among other dignitaries.
Aside the main bout, another bout that caught the attention of the fans was the one between UK-based Ghanaian boxer, Seth Gyimah (FreezyMcbones), and Gabriel Adoku where the former knocked down his opponent five times to win the fight in the second round.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines, Mr Nunoo Mensah said it was important for the country to invest in boxing to get boxers in order to represent the country at Olympics games
According to him, the various bouts witnessed on the night showed that there were a lot of talents out there that needed to be supported and provided the resources for them to excel.
Joshua Clottey commended the EU and Azumah Nelson for staging such an exhibition to promote boxing in Ghana.
He further noted that he was hopeful the country could have some boxers to qualify for this year’s Games in France, adding that failure to secure qualifications would be bad.
