EBID honours Dr George Agyekum Donkor

PRESIDENT and Chair of the Board of Directors of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), Dr George Agyekum Donkor, has been recognised for his contribution to the development of finance and regional economic integration in West Africa.

The recognition highlights his role in mobilising investment, strengthening development financing mechanisms and supporting economic transformation initiatives across the ECOWAS region.

A statement shared with The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday by the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) said Dr Donkor had been selected to receive the Distinguished African Development Finance Leadership Award – Regional Integration and Economic Transformation at the 16th African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA) 2026.

The award, to be conferred by the African Leadership Organisation (UK) Limited and the Editorial Board of African Leadership Magazine, followed what organisers described as a “rigorous merit based evaluation process”.

According to the citation, Dr Donkor was recognised for his exceptional stewardship and transformative impact on West Africa’s development finance architecture, particularly through efforts aimed at connecting regional priorities with global investment opportunities.

The Editorial Board commended his leadership in mobilising concessional and market rate capital, advancing blended finance and co-investment frameworks, and strengthening financial systems needed to support sustainable economic growth within the sub region.

In a recognition of its contribution to regional development, EBID has also been designated a Strategic Development Finance Partner of the ALM Africa Summit 2026.

The designation underscores the bank’s role in promoting regional integration, infrastructure financing, enterprise development and economic transformation across ECOWAS member states.

Dr Donkor has been invited to serve as Special Guest of Honour and keynote speaker at the awards ceremony scheduled for July 3, 2026, at the House of Lords in London, United Kingdom.

The summit, which is on the theme: ‘From Vision to Velocity: Driving Africa’s Next Wave of Growth and Leadership,’ is expected to bring together policymakers, investors, development finance institutions, business executives and other global leaders to discuss Africa’s development prospects.

Reacting to the honour, Dr Donkor described the recognition as a tribute to the collective efforts of EBID, its member states and development partners.

“This recognition is not only personal but a tribute to the collective dedication of the entire EBID team, our Member States, and development partners who share the vision of a prosperous, integrated West Africa,” he stated.

He said the award reinforced the bank’s commitment to inclusive finance, small and medium enterprise growth, women led enterprise development and infrastructure financing as key drivers of long term economic competitiveness.

As part of the event, Dr Donkor is expected to participate in a high level panel discussion involving Heads of State, ministers, sovereign investors, central bank governors, development finance institutions and multinational executives. He will also engage with selected members of the United Kingdom House of Lords.

The statement further noted that Dr Donkor had previously received several international honours, including the Development Champion Award at the Rebranding Africa Forum in Brussels in 2023 and the Prix de la Foundation award at the Crans Montana Forum in Geneva in 2022.

It added that he had been listed four consecutive times among the 100 personalities transforming Africa by Financial Afrik, an international publication focused on finance and economic development on the continent.
