FAO, MoFA train agric officers in Savannah Region

Thirty-two selected Animal Production and Agriculture officers from the Savannah Region have completed a five-day training workshop on Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) to strengthen their capacity in providing quality extension services to livestock farmers.

The training, held in Tamale, was organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in partnership with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).

Participants were drawn from the North, Central and North East Gonja districts.

It formed part of the European Union (EU)-funded Food Security Response in Northern Ghana Project, which seeks to enhance food and nutrition security and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable farming populations in six districts across the Savannah, North East and Upper East regions.

The initiative focuses on addressing hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition through the promotion of Good Agronomic Practices (GAP) and GAHP to boost crop and livestock production as well as value chains.

It targets about 10,000 direct beneficiaries, including smallholder farmers, particularly women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the closing ceremony yesterday, the Savannah Regional Director of Food and Agriculture, Mr Seidu Sulemana, commended FAO and the EU for their continued support in building the capacity of agricultural extension officers in northern Ghana.

He said the training would help participants to effectively support the government’s Feed Ghana flagship programme in their operational districts.

“Livestock production is a profitable venture, and upgrading the skills of our officers is critical to improving productivity across the districts,” he stressed.

Mr Sulemana assured FAO and the EU of his outfit’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the project, while urging participants to put the knowledge gained into practice on the field.
