GCU, US partner donate defibrillator to Manhyia Hospital

Garden City University (GCU), Kenyase, in collaboration with its international partner, James Madison University (JMU) in Virginia, USA, has donated a defibrillator to the Emergency Unit of the Manhyia Government Hospital in Kumasi.

The donation stemmed from the annual student exchange programme between the two institutions.

During this year’s clinical placements in selected hospitals in Kumasi, students from JMU observed that the hospital’s Emergency Unit lacked a defibrillator, a vital device used in managing cardiac emergencies. In response, the university procured the equipment, valued at GH¢26,000, to support emergency healthcare delivery at the facility.

The defibrillator was presented last Thursday at a brief ceremony attended by the Head of the Department of Nursing and Midwifery at GCU, Dr Ramatu Agambire; lecturers and clinical coordinators from the department; a representative from the Office of International Affairs, Dr Jemima Antwi-Agyei; and nursing students.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the hospital, Dr Bernard A. Akoto expressed appreciation to both universities for what he described as a timely intervention.

He noted that the long-standing partnership between GCU and the Manhyia Government Hospital had significantly contributed to healthcare delivery, clinical training and professional development over the years.

Dr Akoto added that the defibrillator would enhance the hospital’s capacity to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies and improve patient outcomes.

For its part, GCU expressed gratitude to James Madison University for the support and reaffirmed its commitment to partnerships that positively impact healthcare, education and community development in Ghana.
