THE Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for a gang of armed robbers who attacked passengers along the Ahyiresu to Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region on Sunday night.
The incident occurred at about 10:30 pm when six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump action guns, ambushed a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334 20. The bus was carrying about 30 football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea from Samreboi to Berekum.
According to a statement signed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police and Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Command, Godwin Ahianyo, and made available to The Ghanaian Times, police patrol teams responded to distress calls and rushed to the scene.
The statement said the driver of the bus attempted to escape from the attackers, but the vehicle skidded off the road into a nearby bush.
It said during the attack, one of the footballers, Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.
The statement further noted that another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GH¢4,500 by the assailants.
It added that two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to aid investigations.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area as efforts intensify to apprehend the suspects.
The police assured the public that the perpetrators would be arrested within the shortest possible time and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
