CUTS International, an Accra-based policy think tank, has called for the suspension of the planned rollout of the TRAFFITECH-GH project scheduled to commence tomorrow.
According to the think tank, the temporary suspension was necessary to ensure that faulty traffic lights, faded road markings and inadequate speed-limit signs at various enforcement locations were fixed.
“Until faulty traffic lights, faded road markings and inadequate speed limit signs at enforcement locations are fixed, enforcement will be problematic,” it said.
A statement issued by the think tank said activating the automated traffic enforcement system under the prevailing road conditions could expose motorists to fines for offences they might have been unable to avoid because the relevant traffic signals and road markings were unclear or not visible.
While supporting the use of technology to improve compliance with road traffic regulations and reduce crashes, CUTS said effective enforcement required the government to first ensure that the road infrastructure against which motorists would be judged was functional, visible and properly maintained.
