Tamale South MP gives GH¢150,000 to support 45 medical students

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has presented GH¢150,000 to support the education of 45 medical students previously sponsored by the late MP for Tamale Central, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The gesture forms part of Mr Iddrisu’s commitment to sustaining the scholarship programme established by the late Dr Murtala to support medical students from the Tamale Central Constituency.

The beneficiaries, studying medicine at various universities across the country, are expected to receive continued support until they complete their training.

Mr Iddrisu made the commitment during the final funeral rites of Dr Murtala in Tamale last year, following an appeal by the students for continued sponsorship after the death of their benefactor.

The latest payment is the second financial support Mr Iddrisu has provided to the students since Dr Murtala’s death.

Presenting the payment receipts on behalf of Mr Iddrisu, the Tamale Central Constituency Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Bashiru Ibrahim, said the support was intended to enable the students to complete their training and contribute to healthcare delivery in Northern Ghana.

He said the initiative would also preserve Dr Murtala’s legacy and help bridge the doctor-patient gap in the northern part of the country.

“This is not merely about financial assistance; it is about investing in hope and preserving the selfless vision of the late Dr Murtala,” he said.

Dr Murtala died alongside seven other government officials in a military helicopter crash at Adansi in the Ashanti Region last year.
