THE Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has left Ghana for Barcelona, Spain, leading a Ghanaian delegation to the 4th High-Level Meeting of the “In Defence of Democracy” Initiative.
Her participation places Ghana among countries working to strengthen democratic values, protect constitutional rule, and promote accountable leadership at a time when many nations are facing growing political division, misinformation, and pressure on democratic institutions.
The meeting is expected to bring together heads of state, government officials, policy experts, and international partners to discuss practical ways of defending democracy, protecting human rights, and building stronger public trust in governance.
The Vice President’s spokesperson, Ama Pratt, said Ghana’s presence at the summit reflects the country’s long-standing commitment to democratic governance and peaceful political transitions.
“Ghana is widely seen as one of Africa’s stable democracies, with a record of regular elections and respect for constitutional order,” she said.
According to her, the Vice President is also expected to use the platform to engage other leaders on issues of mutual interest, including development cooperation, youth participation in governance, and economic growth.
“Her trip comes at a time when Ghana is seeking stronger international partnerships to support national development and deepen its role in global affairs,” she added.
