10 armed robbers arrested, 3 killed in police operation

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 10 suspected armed robbers believed to be behind a series of violent attacks on rural banks and financial institutions across the country.

The suspects, who had terrorised communities in the Ashanti, Ahafo, Western, Central and Eastern regions, were picked up in a special operation.

Those in custody included the alleged ringleader, Akwesi Agyei, alias Cobra, alongside Ibrahim Alhassan, Samuel Appiah (Akwesi Mugu), Francis Acquah (Preman), David Obuobi (Wasty), Martin Akansina (One Billion), Nana Yaw Frimpong (Mystical), Kojo Atingawo (Borga), Samuel Akwasi Gyan, and Stephen Sey.

Three other gang members were killed in a shootout, while a manhunt continues for fugitives.

Announcing the arrests at a press conference in Accra on September 24, 2024, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Yohuno, said the gang had been active for more than a year, leaving residents and financial institutions in fear.

He explained that the successful swoop followed six months of investigations, surveillance and credible intelligence across communities such as Ejisu Achiaakrom, Atonsu-Kyirapatre, Obuasi, Kaase, and Buoho.

Police recovered 14 weapons, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, pistols, and large quantities of ammunition, as well as vehicles, motorbikes, mobile phones and equipment used by the gang.

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed that the suspects were linked to robberies at Adansi Rural Bank (Fomena), Lower Pra Rural Bank (Inchaban), Ecobank (Kenyasi), Ahafo Community Bank (Kukuom), Asokore Rural Bank (Kumasi), and others.

At Fomena for instance, the robbers scaled the bank wall, tied up guards and cut through the vault with an electric cutter before escaping with cash and weapons. At Kenyasi, they overpowered two police officers, seizing their rifles.

Among the seized weapons was a rifle confirmed as that of Corporal Francis Adu Yaw, who was killed on the Bibiani-Goaso highway in November 2024. Two others were identified as police rifles stolen during the Ecobank, Kenyasi attack.

According to COP Donkor, Cobra was arrested on September 18 at Esereso Adagya, where police found two rifles submerged in water and a Toyota Noah minibus.

His confession led to further arrests, including David Obuobi (Wasty), who was found with pump-action guns, pistols and ammunition.

Another suspect, Stephen Sey, was caught with a stolen police rifle hidden in his car.

She said some suspects had confessed, while identification parades and recovered exhibits tied them to the crimes.

Investigations continue as police pursue the remaining gang members.
