Armed robbers kill cop, attack bullion van, bolt with money

A policeman has been killed when suspected robbers attacked a bullion van that he was on board, at Nyankomaso in Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, in the early hours of Tuesday.

A police source at Obuasi, confirmed the incident to the Ghanaian Times, here, saying the victim, identified as Corporal Martin Baba, was shot dead by the armed robbers, and bolted with money they took from the vehicle.

The suspected robbers, said to be aged between 16 and 25, bolt with huge sum of money they took from the van, which was being transported from the Ghana Commercial Bank, Dunkwa, to New Edubiase.

The Ghanaian Times gathered that the suspects ambushed the van with registration number GT 543-19, at a spot on the road, which was very bad and made driving difficult.

The source said when the driver of the van slowed down, the suspects opened fire, killing the policeman on the spot.

Two other persons, a female and a male, however, received injuries and were rushed to the Anglogold Ashanti Hospital at Obuasi.

It is recalled that on September 28, 2020, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, revealed at a news conference that the Central Bank would resort to using helicopters to transport money as the attacks on bullion vans were becoming rampant.

Many people the Ghanaian Times spoke to on the issue, indicated it was time for the Bank of Ghana to use helicopters to transport money to save lives and avoid siren use.
