Arteta disappointed at Arsenal’s lack of January transfer activity

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted he is disappointed by the club’s failure to make any signings during the winter transfer window.

It was expected that The Gunners would bring in another attacking player after Gabriel Jesus suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season, while Bukayo Saka is yet to return from hamstring issues.

But no new additions have arrived, as Arsenal continue to chase leaders Liverpool in the Premier League title race and also aim for UEFA Champions League glory.

Arteta also offered praise for the “disciplined” way that Arsenal approached the transfer window.

“We had a clear intention, which is always when a window opens to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can make an impact,” Arteta said.

“With players injured, we’ve been impacted and we haven’t achieved it.

“We are disappointed in that sense but as well, we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that as well. I think that we were.

“It’s in the profile, a player that we believe can make us much better.

“Financially there are a lot of ways, a lot of things that we must stay in the lane that has taken us this far and from there try to improve.”

Arsenal thrashed Manchester City 5-1 on Sunday to move six points behind Liverpool in the Premier League, although Arne Slot’s team have a game in hand.

The Gunners have also safely booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League following a successful league phase campaign, which they wrapped up with a victory against Girona.

And this week, they will attempt to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in a bid to reach March’s Carabao Cup final.—Eurosport
