Bright Steps International School launches autism awareness campaign

BRIGHT Steps International School (BSI) in East Legon has launched a month-long awareness campaign under the theme: ‘Understanding Autism, Empowering Abilities.’
The initiative seeks to promote greater awareness and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) while encouraging communities to focus on the abilities and potential of children on the autism spectrum.
April is globally recognised as Autism Awareness Month. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour.
Although awareness is gradually increasing in Ghana, many families still face challenges related to early diagnosis, stigma, and access to specialised educational support.
Through its Autism Awareness Month campaign, Bright Steps International School will share educational feature stories in national media, engage parents and communities, and highlight the importance of early intervention and inclusive education.
According to the school’s leadership, creating supportive environments for children with autism could significantly improve their ability to communicate, learn, and develop independence.
“Every child has unique strengths and abilities,” the school noted. “When we understand autism better, we can provide the right support that empowers children to thrive,” it said.
Bright Steps International School provides inclusive education for both neurotypical children and children with developmental differences, including autism.
The school integrates structured learning with specialised support services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and individualised educational programs designed to meet the needs of each child.
“As Ghana continues to expand conversations around inclusive education and developmental support, initiatives such as this campaign aim to promote acceptance and encourage families to seek early support when developmental concerns arise,” the statement said.
The school expressed the hope that this year’s theme: ‘Understanding Autism, Empowering Abilities,’ would inspire communities to replace stigma with understanding and ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
