GAF Intake 2,1990 builds summer hut at ARTS at Shai Hills
The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas OppongPeprah yesterday inaugurated a summer hut also known as a ‘matambo’ built by members of Intake Course two, 1990 of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) at the Army Recruit Training School (ARTS) at Shai Hills, in the ShaiOsudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.
The facility whichis valued at ¢30, 000 was to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the group as past recruits and first batch to trainees at ARTS.
In a speech read on his behalf, Maj. Gen OppongPeprah said the Army hieracy was making efforts to improve on the infrastructure adding that efforts of course intake two of 1990 was commendable.
He said the Ghana Army was putting up accommodation facilities across its barracks in the country and appreciated the group for their efforts in supporting their alma mater.
The chairman of th year group, Ex Warrant Officer ( W. O) I AbdulaiSachibuIssaka said the discipline, hard work, dedication and resolve to always do right, which was instilled in members of Course two of 1990 could not be over-emphasised.
That, he said, have over the years had propelled members to achieve higher heights even after their retirement from the military life, thereby making them pacesetters in their collective and individual lives.
“Some among us commissioned as officers and are still in active service. Others too have climbed to the highest pinnacles in their careers as chartered accountants, administrators, heads of institutions, chiefs and some to the paramount status, security consultants, businessmen and quite a number in the diaspora, ” he said
Ex W. O I Issaka said the construction and inauguration of the ‘matambo’ was to add to the efforts made by the army in general and the school in particular to address the infrastructural needs of the school.
He mentioned that the ‘matambo’ would serve as a place of commune for members of the school during social events and celebrations as well as in adverse weather.
He said the year group will in the near future adopt a ward at the 37 military hospital, refurbish it and rename it.
The Commanding Officer of ARTS, Lt Col John Mensah Tenzii called on other year groups to come to the aid of the school, assuring the year group that the facility would be used for its purpose and “l promise to ensure that this facility is maintained in order to prolong the life span of this ‘matambo’
Intake Course two of 1990 is made up of about 300 men of the Ghana Army who were the first batch of recruits to be trained at Army Recruit Training School at ShaiHills in 1990.
The group was formed in the year 2000 and was revamped in 2016 and currently has an active membership of 120.
