Gbi Paramount Chief rallies support for blood donation

The Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, Togbega Gabusu VII, has organised a blood donation exercise at the Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe to help ensure adequate blood supply for lifesaving medical care.
Togbega Gabusu indicated that he was motivated to initiate the exercise in collaboration with the hospital’s management due to the critical role blood played in healthcare delivery, which, he noted, was often in short supply.
Speaking during the exercise, organised to mark World Blood Donor Month, he emphasised that blood was life and urged the public to willingly donate to support health facilities.
He observed that one of the greatest gifts to humanity was blood and encouraged Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of regular donation to help save lives.
The Paramount Chief explained that blood was not a commodity that could be purchased on the open market, but rather depended on the willingness of individuals to donate at health facilities to support those in need.
He stated that the initiative was aimed at mobilising sufficient blood for the hospital to enable health professionals to deliver timely care, stressing that shortages had long been a challenge.
Togbega Gabusu further directed chiefs within the Gbi Traditional Area to create a conducive environment for health workers and support similar donation exercises in their communities throughout June to help build adequate reserves.
He urged traditional leaders to treat the exercise as a priority by granting permission and offering the necessary support to ensure its success.
Touching on challenges facing the Volta Regional Hospital, he noted that the facility lacked essential equipment and appealed to the government to upgrade it to reflect its regional status.
The Hospital Administrator, Mr Divine Kwashie Akli, commended Togbega Gabusu for the initiative, noting that it would significantly support the hospital’s blood needs and enhance healthcare delivery.
He stressed that continuous public education on blood donation remained vital and urged institutions, corporate bodies and individuals to emulate the gesture.
According to Mr Akli, the hospital relied heavily on surrounding communities to meet its blood requirements and would continue to engage them for support.
The Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Prosper Kumi, also praised Togbega Gabusu’s leadership and assured that the government was committed to providing the necessary equipment and upgrading the hospital to improve service delivery.
