GOC Presidential hopeful Akpokavie courts corporate bodies

Mr Richard Akpokavie, a Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Presidential hopeful, has held high-stakes meetings with some of the nation’s top corporate sponsors and influential sports stakeholders.
This decisive move by the astute sports administrator and legal practitioner underscores his determination to secure sustainable funding that will propel Ghana’s Olympic movement to new heights.
The discussions that began earlier this month concentrated on the development of a strong sponsorship framework aimed at providing long-term financial security for Ghana’s National Federations and elevating the country’s athletes on the global stage.
Issues discussed at the meeting included sponsorship investments, athlete development programme, infrastructural assistance, and long-term collaboration to provide financial security and continuing growth for Ghana’s sports federations.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Akpokavie stated that corporate partnerships were the backbone of a thriving sports industry.
“Ghanaian athletes and federations need strong, reliable backing to compete and excel internationally. My priority is to create sustainable sponsorship structures to benefit the entire Olympic ecosystem; something I have proven I can deliver,” he stated.
In furtherance, Mr Akpokavie also pointed to his tenure as GOC Secretary-General as evidence of his capability, recalling how he spearheaded efforts to secure full funding for Ghana’s participation in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Additionally, he mentioned the pivotal role he played in advancing negotiations with ‘Cocoa4Ghana’ for a staggering 1.7 million euros per year—an achievement made possible through the support of corporate Ghana.
Mr Akpokavie’s latest initiative involves engaging some of Ghana’s most prominent corporate brands and organisations deeply invested in the advancement of sports development.
With the GOC elections slated for April 26, 2025, Akpokavie’s proactive outreach underscores his vision to secure sustainable funding and forge strategic alliances that would propel Ghana’s Olympic movement to new heights.
