Kintampo North MCE Urges Public to Eat Ghanaian Food to Strengthen Food Security

The Municipal Chief Executive for Kintampo North Municipality, Isaac Donkor, has urged the public to patronise locally produced food and support government agricultural initiatives.
He said choosing Ghanaian food and backing ongoing agricultural programmes were essential to strengthening food security, improving farmer livelihoods, and ensuring a more self-reliant national economy.
He made the call at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration, held on Friday at Yaara in Kintampo North, to honour the contribution of farmers to national development.
In his address, Mr Donkor stated that this year’s theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” reflected the responsibility of every citizen in safeguarding the country’s agricultural future.
He noted that the path to national stability began with food sovereignty and encouraged consumers to embrace locally grown staples such as yam, maize, cashew, rice, and vegetables.
Mr Donkor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers through the Feed Ghana Programme introduced by President John Dramani Mahama.
The programme, he explained, was designed to modernise agriculture, reduce dependency on imports, revitalise key crop value chains, and create sustainable jobs for the youth.
He added that the initiative provided farmers with mechanisation services, improved inputs, farm banks, training, and infrastructure including irrigation schemes and warehouses to reduce post-harvest losses.
Investing in farmers, he stressed, remained one of the strongest pathways to securing the country’s long-term food supply.
The MCE noted that Kintampo distinguished itself in this year’s awards, producing a national award winner for Best Youth Farmer.
He said the achievement demonstrated that agriculture remained an attractive and profitable venture for young people.
He also commended Kintampo Senior High School, which was adjudged Regional Best Senior High School in Agriculture, describing the honour as an indication that the municipality was nurturing the next generation of agripreneurs and agriculturists.
“To all our award winners, national and regional, we say ayeekoo, your hard work has placed Kintampo on the agricultural map of Ghana,” he said.
Mr Donkor encouraged farmers to form stronger cooperatives, adopt good agricultural practices, and safeguard the environment that supported their livelihoods.
He further appealed to residents to support farmers by consciously choosing locally produced food to sustain the local economy.
The ceremony featured presentations, cultural displays, and the recognition of outstanding farmers across several categories.
At the event, Haruna Sunkwa was honoured as the Municipal Best Farmer, with John Manu adjudged First Runner Up.
