La Town XI pip Osu to win Homowo Cup
Former Accra Great Olympics striker, Maxwell Abbey Quaye’s second-half penalty handed La Town XI a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Osu Town XI in their 2023 Homowo Cup match played at the McDan La Town Park on Saturday.
The match formed part of activities to mark the Homowo celebration of the two townships.
La as the host dominated the early exchanges with chances falling to Abraham Laryea and Daniel Amuzu but both wasted the chances.
Osu Town XI responded and created chances for Samuel Armah and Julius Konyah which were also wasted with Osa Reina in post for La Town XI making a pretty good saves for them.
Osu continued with the dominance and nearly snatched the leader in the 37th minute when Armah was put clear on goal, but fired off target to end the first half barren.
Back from half time, the game moved from one end to the other as both sides attempted to find the back of the net.
La had a penalty in the 56th minute when Osu’s Ishmael Onodai fouled Laryea in an attempt to clear a volley into the area, forcing the referee, Gideon Easel, to point to the spot.
Skipper for the La Town XI, Abbey Quaye, stepped up and coolly slotted home the resultant kick.
Quaye’s former playmate at Great Olympics, Samuel Armah, had a glorious opportunity to draw level for Osu on 62 minutes, but headed to substitute goalkeeper, Justice Adade, who parried the ball back to play and recovered to save the rebound.
La Town XI received a cash prize of GH¢2,000 from a philanthropist and a sponsor of the match, Raymond Addai-Danquah
