The National Association of Registered Midwives, Ghana (NARM-GH), has called for justice for a midwife who was allegedly assaulted at the Tema Community 22 Hospital on Tuesday.
In a press statement signed by its National President, Leticia A. Atiah, and copied to The Ghanaian Times yesterday, said the association condemned the incident, which was captured in a video that has since circulated on social media. It urged authorities to pursue the case to its logical conclusion.
According to the association, the frequent assaults directed at healthcare professionals not only endanger their lives but also undermine the quality of healthcare service delivery across the country.
“Midwives and other healthcare workers dedicate their lives to serving the public, often under challenging conditions, and must be allowed to carry out their responsibilities in a safe and secure environment,” the statement noted.
“We respectfully call on the appropriate authorities to ensure that justice is served to the affected midwife and the facility. The case should be pursued to its logical conclusion to serve as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar acts against healthcare workers,” it added.
NARM-GH further urged stakeholders in the health sector, including the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS), to take decisive measures to address all forms of assault against healthcare workers in the country.
The association also emphasised the need for intensified public education by the MoH on the appropriate channels for lodging complaints and seeking redress within health facilities, noting that this could help reduce such incidents.
It expressed appreciation to the Ghana Police Service for its swift intervention in restoring calm and initiating the necessary legal processes following the incident.
Moreover, the association commended the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate of the GHS for its support to the affected midwife and the hospital.
NARM-GH reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a safe, respectful and conducive working environment for all midwives and healthcare professionals across the country.
