Pupils of Diamond International School visit New Times Corp.

The pupils and teachers of Diamond International School in Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria, yesterday paid a visit to the New Times Corporation (NTC) in Accra to learn about newspaper production.

The pupils  who are on a 10- day educational tour to  Ghana, were accompanied by the Governess (proprietress) of the school, Mrs Bisi Akin-Afogunmati, the head teacher, Mr Samuel Elvis Duodu,  Mr Wiliams Joseph De Okoro, head of the school’s music department among other teaching staff of the school.

As a show of kind gesture, the pupils and their teachers presented a wall clock with inscriptions of the school to the Ghanaian Times.

The News Editor of the Ghanaian Times, Mr Matthew Ayoo, who received the clock, expressed appreciation for the kind gesture.

He briefed the visitors about the history of the corporation and took them through the stages of news gatherings and production process.

Mr Ayoo said the corporation which publishes the flagship Ghanaian Times newspaper and The Spectator weekend newspaper was established in 1957 by the first President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah as a media house to serve as the mouth-piece for his government at the time.

Answering questions on how the corporation gathers information from the 16 regions in the country, Mr Ayoo explained that the corporation had correspondents in all the regions who filed stories from their respective locations about events, to the newsroom in Accra where the production process is done.

He advised the young Nigerian school children to take their academic work seriously to enable them to achieve higher heights in life after completing their education.

Mrs Akin- Afogunmati, the proprietress said that educational trips provided great opportunity for pupils to gain experiences that significantly impacted their academic lives as they got to learn other things outside of the classroom.

She noted that “some pupils turn to be timid in class, so this visit will enable them to be bold to ask questions which in the end expose and broaden their horizon.”

The Governess commended the staff and management of the corporation for their relentless efforts in fostering peace in the country through responsible and professional reportage.
