WOSPAG Chair Joyce Mahama voted AWISA president
The President of the Women Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG), Mrs Joyce Mahama, has been elected as president of the African Women in Sports Association (AWISA).
The election was held in Accra last Saturday during a three-day AWISA congress which brought together about 80 delegates from over 54 African countries.
This is the first time a Ghanaian has been elected to the position of president in AWISA following in the stead of Dr Debora Cubbage, who was the first to be elected as the vice president.
Mrs Mahama contested the position with an Angolan delegate.
The President of Women Sports in Uganda, Madam Hadijah Namanda, won the Vice President position, while Seychelles took the position of Secretary, Vice Secretary from Namibia and the position of Treasurer going to a Ghanaian.
At the congress, five chairpersons were elected for the five regions under the association with some retaining their positions.
Speaking to the Times Sports, Mrs Mahama stated that her vision for the association was to unite African women in sports and ensure a fight against violence in respect of women in sports.
She noted that the association was mandated to handle gender equality, discrimination against women, adding that, “We have to make sure women in sports were comfortable and have funds to enable the association work for the common good of all.”
She said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) seeks to promote women participation in sports, whether competitive or recreational.
Moreover, Mrs Mahama promised to promote ampe to become a recognised sports within the African sub-region before the end of her four-year tenure.
She therefore pleaded with corporate bodies to support the association to achieve its aims and objectives.
