Black Stars Mgt. C’ttee members not paid for now — Kofi Adams

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has stated that members of the Black Stars Management Committee are not being paid in the interim.

He added that members of the committee will be rewarded for their efforts should Ghana qualify to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The next FIFA World Cup takes place in the USA, Canada and Mexico with 48 countries competing; Africa has nine automatic qualification spots and Ghana is in a prime position to qualify from Group I after picking up 15 points from six games.

However, members of the team’s management committee, including Chairman, Dr Randy Abbey and Vice Chairman, Stephen Appiah, are working without payment but are on the brink of getting rewarded.

“Black Stars management committee members are not being paid for now but if we qualify for the World Cup, then the government will decide what they must be given as a reward” he told Asempa FM in an interview.

Mr Adams, also stated that the reason for not announcing the budget for the Black Stars’ latest preparation and involvement in the international games with Chad and Madagascar was to avoid distractions.

He indicated that revealing the budget would have been a distraction for the Black Stars preparations for the qualifiers.

“People were asking me to disclose the budget for the games, but I kept asking myself what the budget would do for them ahead of the games. Sometimes, some situations, create distraction for the team, so we would weigh every situation before making a decision,” he indicated.

Ghana leads Group I with 15 points from six games.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East Constituency and a former Deputy Finance Minister of Ghana, Abena Osei Asare, has asked the technical team of the Black Stars to invite more players from the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

“Mr Speaker, we are calling on the GFA and the Minister for Sports to make sure they do everything possible for us to see the local people in the Black Stars as well” she stressed.

She made the appeal in her address on the floor of parliament in the wake of Ghana’s brilliant performance in the latest round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana beat Chad 5-0 and beat Madagascar 3-0 to move to the summit of Group I and get in line to pick up the group’s sole automatic qualification to next year’s World Cup.

“My only concern is that, we don’t see a lot of our local players in there (the Black Stars) and that is what we should look at. We should appreciate what we have at home…most of the time, it’s the foreign players we call but yet we have teams like the Kotoko’s, the Samartex and all those other teams who have very good players.”
