Holy Stars upset Hearts
Premier League debutants, Basake Holy Stars, yesterday shocked Phobian faithful with a 1-0 victory over Hearts of Oak in their opening fixture of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League (GPL) at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Attacking midfielder, Prince Tweneboah, scored the only goal of the game on the second minute to pluck all three points for the visitors.
Police personnel had a difficult task whisking members of the playing body out of the stadium as the angry fans gathered at the entrance of the dressing room hooting and pouring invectives on them.
Right from the blast of referee Maxwell Owusu’s whistle, Holy Stars chased the Phobians for possession and did that to some success at the very early stages.
After referee Owusu waved off a penalty appeal for Hearts, the visitors turn defence into attack and with Frances Oteng Gyetuah finding Tweneboah in the box to nod home the opener.
Hearts regrouped in search for the equaliser but Holy Stars coached by former Asante Kotoko coach, Abdulai Gazale, employed a resolute strategy to hold the host at bay to record a historic win.
Hearts of Oak will trek to the Kpnado Sports Stadium to play Hearts of Lions next while Holy Stars return to Anyinase to welcome Dreams FC.
