Sports Ministry to collaborate with sporting icons to develop sports

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr Kofi Adams, has indicated the Ministry’s willingness to collaborate with various sporting icons to grow and develop sports in the country.

“Ghana is blessed with great sporting icons who have blazed the trail to put the name of the country on the sporting map. Giving them their due respect and tapping into their vast knowledge for the progress of Ghana sports is a sure way to go,” he stated.

The minister made these remarks after holding a closed-door meeting with former three-time African Footballer of the Year and UEFA Champions League winner, Abedi Ayew “Pele”, at the ministry last Friday.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Mr Adams said their discussion centred on finding the best solutions to revive the declining fortunes of Ghana football, as well as strategising to ensure that the Black Stars qualify for the upcoming Mundial in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.

“The knowledge and skills of the likes of Abedi Ayew and others must be tapped into to help revive our struggling games before they disappear with them,” he said.

“Since coming into office, the Ministry has collaborated with Abedi Ayew to ensure that the Black Stars achieve the needed results from their last two games, and indeed, the collaboration has been worthwhile,” he added.

“We set ourselves a target to ensure that the Black Stars go through their two FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar. Thankfully, we succeeded. Another set of games is ahead of us, and like we did in the previous matches, we need to plan again and execute every detail of that plan until we secure a qualification ticket,” the Minister noted.

Refusing to share details of the plans, Mr Adams stated that since they did not disclose the previous plans yet still achieved success, they would take that approach again.

According to the Minister, from the outset, they were very confident in the outcome of the collaboration with the former Black Stars captain and are looking to expand their outreach to other great football icons in the country, all in a bid to get the best for the Black Stars while focusing on improving football development.

“The Ministry is willing and prepared to collaborate with sporting icons from various fields to grow and develop sports in Ghana, and in the coming weeks, we shall line up some icons and hold discussions to that effect,” he indicated.
