AWISA elective congress slated for Nov-10

The African Women in Sports (AWISA) elective congress is set to kick off on November 7-10 at the M-Plaza Hotel in Accra.

The event would bring together approximately 80 delegates from 55 African countries to champion empowerment and gender equity in sports.

It is under theme; ‘to ensure empowerment and gender equity and participate in change of Africa we want.’

Speaking in a telephone interview with the Times Sports yesterday, the president of Women Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG), Mrs Joyce Mahama, said the congress would promote both male and female sports in Africa.

The congress, she noted, provides a unique opportunity for African women in sports to share expertise, experiences, and strategies for overcoming challenges.

She also stated that delegates will engage in plenary sessions, workshops, and panel discussions to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.

AWISA will also elect new leadership during the congress, paving the way for a renewed commitment to gender equity and empowerment.

She mentioned that hosting the congress offers Ghana an opportunity to promote boys and girls participation in sports, and also have the chance to vie for any position at the congress. Moreover, she said members of the Women Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG) will have the opportunity to stand for elections as well as elect new executives.

AWISA is the umbrella body of women sport in Africa with the task of promoting gender equality, empowerment of women and girls, and fight against gender based violence in sports, among other gender related tasks.

It was founded in May 1988, as an organisation tasked with the responsibility and mandate to promote gender parity and empowerment of all women, girls and boys in Africa.
