Black Queens aim double over Namibia

The Black Queens of Ghana would be in action today in South Africa when they take on Namibia in a second leg Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final round qualifier.

The winner over the two-legs would secure qualification to the senior women continental showpiece in Morocco in 2024.

The Ghanaians emerged 3-1 winners of the first leg played in Accra in Friday and would hope to protect that lead to secure a return to the championship Ghana hosted in 2018 but missed out on the following edition.

Doris Boaduwaa grabbed a brace in the first leg with the team captain, Portia Boakye scoring one for her team and an own goal for the Namibians.

Despite the lead, the Black Queens remain focused on clearing the final hurdle on a winning note, as that requires a second beating of the Namibians.

Although not a powerhouse in the female African game, the Namibians gave a good account of themselves and held the Ghanaians spellbound until the latter stages of the first half when they conceded the first goal.

In front of their home fans, the Namibians would adopt a different approach to the game.

That will see an attempt to put the Black Queens under pressure from the start of the game in a bid to get an early goal to unsettle the Queens.

But that would not be an easy task for the home team considering the determination written on the faces of the Ghanaians to record a double in the last leg of qualifiers.

The Queens held their first training session at the Wits Sports Complex, Bloemfontein-Johannesburg Johanesburg, on Sunday after arriving the same day.

Head Coach of the team, Nora Häuptle has not minced words about the team’s ambition and would go into the game as if it was the first leg and as if their lives depend on it.
