A 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
Amedzorme was convicted after pleading guilty to the offence before the Kpando Circuit Court, following her arrest and the safe rescue of the baby in the Oti Region.
The Volta North Regional Police Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, signed by its Public Relations Officer, Inspector Felix Kwao.
The case was reported to the Police on July 17, 2026, after the baby’s mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21, said she had briefly left her son in the care of Amedzorme, a fellow market trader, while she went to purchase packaging bags.
When Xagbe returned, she discovered that both Amedzorme and her baby were missing. The Police subsequently commenced investigations and, acting on intelligence, arrested Amedzorme on July 18 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region.
The operation also led to the safe rescue of the eight-month-old baby, who was found unharmed.
During investigations, Amedzorme reportedly admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently at large.
She was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, and remanded into Police custody. She reappeared before the court on August 3, 2026, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
The Police said efforts were ongoing to arrest Amedzorme’s fiancé to assist with investigations and establish the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
The Volta North Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, particularly children, and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of other persons.
