GFA sets Aug 31 for 2025 Champion of Champions game

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has scheduled the 2025 Champion of Champions match for August 31, marking the ceremonial kickoff of the 2025-26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season.
The one-off fixture, in accordance with Article 9 of the Premier League Regulations, will see reigning Premier League champions, Gold Stars, face off with MTN FA Cup holders, Asante Kotoko.
Gold Stars secured their maiden top-flight title while Kotoko added to their illustrious history by clinching the MTN FA Cup, thereby booking their place in the prestigious fixture.
The Champion of Champions match serves as the traditional curtain-raiser to the Ghanaian football season, offering fans an exciting preview of the competition and intensity the new season is set to bring.
Meanwhile, the Executive Council of the FA has approved the 2025/26 GFA Omnibus Competitions Calendar at its meeting held last week.
The new football season will officially commence on July 1, 2025, and conclude on June 30, 2026, aligning with the GFA Statutes and the Association’s accounting year.
According to the calendar, all Premier League matches will be played on Sundays, with midweek dates reserved for outstanding fixtures, mirroring the structure of the 2024/25 season.
Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League and the Division One League will also maintain Sunday match days.
With the MTN FA Cup, only selected matches in the Round of 64 may be played midweek, while all Women’s FA Cup matches will take place on weekends.
The season will feature the return of eTrophy, offering gamers a platform to display their skills and compete for places in the national eFootball team while Beach Soccer and Futsal Premier would remain part of the season’s programme.
All Regional Football Association leagues; including Division Two, Division Three, Regional Women’s Division One, and the Boys and Girls Colts Leagues (U13, U15, U17); will start on or before October 1, 2025, and conclude by May 31, 2026.
Girls Colts Football Expansion: In a major boost to the GFA Women’s Football Strategy, the 2025/26 season will witness the nationwide rollout of Girls Colts competitions (U15 and U17), building on the pilot success in the Northern and Greater Accra Regions this past season. These competitions will be held in partnership with FIFA Women’s Football Development and the 10 Regional Football Associations. –Ghanafa.org
