Govt urged to increase investment in vocational, skills training
THE Founder of Sweet Ambition Cakes and Pastries, Miss Doreenda Twumasi, has called on government agencies, private sector actors and development partners to increase support for vocational training and skills development to reduce unemployment.
She said vocational education and skills training held the key to job creation and addressing unemployment.
Miss Twumasi made the appeal during the graduation ceremony of the school on Sunday in which 45 students trained in baking and pastry graduated.
The school, accredited by the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), focuses on equipping learners with practical, income-generating skills to enhance employability and encourage self-reliance.
Miss Twumasi congratulated the graduates and urged them to apply the knowledge and expertise they had acquired to make meaningful contributions to society.
She stressed the importance of determination and focus as they transition into employment and entrepreneurship.
Miss Twumasi shared her personal experience, recounting how she was unable to pursue further education after completing Senior High School.
Despite the setback, she said she remained committed to her passion for baking and gradually built a career through perseverance and continuous skills development.
“I could not further my education after my senior high school, but that did not discourage me from pursuing what I love most,” she said.
Miss Twumasi encouraged young women facing similar challenges not to lose hope, but to consider vocational education as a viable and rewarding alternative to formal academic pathways.
According to her, skills in baking and pastry could provide a pathway to financial independence while opening up opportunities for entrepreneurship and job creation, while highlighting the growing recognition of technical and entrepreneurial skills as critical drivers of national development and economic growth.
Miss Twumasi noted that vocational institutions play a key role in addressing youth unemployment, particularly among women, by equipping them with practical competencies aligned with market demands.
She further called for increased collaboration and investment from stakeholders to expand access to training programmes and improve resources for vocational institutions.
The Founder of Sweet Ambition Cakes and Pastries said sustained investment in vocational education would not only empower individuals but also stimulate broader economic growth through job creation and small business development.
