The rising number of deaths from road crashes has become a national emergency requiring stronger collaboration among stakeholders to reverse the trend, the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has said.
He said 2,954 people died in road crashes in 2025, the highest number recorded in more than two decades, while road crashes increased by 31.6 per cent between 2021 and 2025.
Mr Nikpe said the situation was having a devastating impact on families and the national economy, particularly as many of the victims were breadwinners and young people, thereby depleting the country’s human resource base.
He was speaking at the opening of the 2026 Review Conference of the Ministry of Transport in Ho on the theme: ‘Financing and Delivery of Resilient Transport Infrastructure and Services: A Big Push for Sustainable Economic Transformation.’
The conference brought together about 150 participants to assess the performance of the transport sector, identify challenges and find solutions to improve service delivery.
Mr Nikpe said the passage of the National Road Safety Authority Regulations, 2022 (L.I. 2468), which gave effect to the National Road Safety Authority Act, 2019 (Act 993), was a critical step towards strengthening the Authority’s mandate to reduce road crashes.
He said the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2025 had also provided the legal framework to regulate the operations of motorcycles and tricycles in the country. Read More
