Textile factory to create jobs in Cape Coast
The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has inspected land earmarked for the construction of a textile and garment factory at Ekon Junction in the Cape Coast Metropolis of the Central Region.
The inspection forms part of processes towards the establishment of the factory, which is expected to create employment opportunities and contribute to efforts to address unemployment in the country.
A 24-hour market is also expected to be constructed near the proposed factory as part of government’s policy to stimulate local economic activity and create additional opportunities for residents.
Mrs Ofosu-Adjare explained after the inspection that the project was part of a commitment made by President John Dramani Mahama last year to establish textile and garment factories in three regions.
She said the other two factories would be located in the Eastern and Bono East regions.
According to the Minister, the proposed location in the Cape Coast Metropolis was ideal because of its accessibility and proximity to essential services, which would facilitate the movement of workers to and from the facility.
She expressed appreciation to the chiefs and residents of Cape Coast for their enthusiasm and support for the establishment of the factory.
Mrs Ofosu-Adjare said the commencement of production, upon completion of the facility, would create jobs and help reduce unemployment in the metropolis and the Central Region.
She disclosed that transaction advisors were working on proposals to address outstanding issues and ensure a smooth take-off of the project.
The Minister explained that government projects went through a number of processes, including procurement and feasibility studies, to ensure that they were properly executed.
“The transaction advisors are working on it. It is always a process because anytime you are executing a government project, you go through a process,” she said.
The Chief Executive of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA), Mr George Justice Arthur, said the Assembly was committed to supporting the execution of the project in the metropolis.
He said the Assembly would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to facilitate the successful implementation of the project.
The proposed textile and garment factory is expected to form part of broader efforts to promote industrialisation, expand employment opportunities and strengthen economic activity in the region.
