9 dead, 15 injured in Walewale road

At least nine people have been confirmed dead with 15 others sustaining injuries in a gory accident which occurred on the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway.

The accident, which took place at the Walewale stretch of the highway in the North East Region on Friday afternoon, involved a Mercedes mini Sprinter bus with Registration number GW 8889-15 and a Mercedes Benz cargo truck with registration number AS 9189 F.

According to an eye witness, the Sprinter bus was travelling from Kumasi towards Nalerigu whilst the cargo car was traveling from Bolgatanga towards Tamale direction.

He said upon reaching the Walewale Petrosol filling station along the stretch where the two vehicles were approaching, a motorcycle rider from nowhere crossed the road from the filling station without any caution.

In an attempt by the driver of the Sprinter bus to avoid crashing into the motorcycle rider, lost control and veered off the road and run into the cargo car resulting in the accident.

The eyewitness blamed the Sprinter driver for the unfortunate incident as he was said to have been speeding upon reaching the Walewale Township.

He indicated that but for the speed, the Sprinter driver could have avoided the careless rider as well as prevented a crash into the cargo truck.

Furthermore, the eyewitness noted that many of the passengers in the Sprinter bus were trapped due to the mangled nature of the Sprinter bus.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Walewale Government Hospital, whilst the injured victims were receiving treatment at the hospital.

A source told this paper that efforts were underway to convey the bodies to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) morgue for preservation.

The vehicles, however, had been towed off the road to ensure free flow of vehicular movement.
