The Accra West Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has completed the installation of a new 315kVA transformer for the Chorkor 31st community in Accra to address the low voltage power challenges being experienced by customers.
This is to augment the existing 315kVA transformer serving customers in the area near Korle Bu in the Ablekuma South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The project estimated to cost GH¢ 290,000, comprises among other things, a non-extensible ring main unit switch, a 6-way distribution panel, protective and system earthing for the substation.
The General Manager for ECG Accra West region, Mrs Sariel Etwire told journalists on Friday after the exercise, that the management of ECG in the Accra West region had earlier held a stakeholder engagement with key community and opinion leaders to discuss the challenges they face due to the overloaded transformer and assured them of measures to resolve the challenge.
She expressed gratitude to the community members and leaders especially the Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma South constituency, Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, for the support and collaboration during the period of installing the additional transformer to improve power supply reliability.
“We are happy to witness the completion of this project. It is our hope that it brings relief and stable power supply to support domestic life and economic activities in this community,” Mrs Etwire added.
She revealed that ECG footed the full cost of the transformer injection project and urged the community to collectively ensure the safety and security of all ECG installations.
The Accra West Regional Manager of the ECG, called on residents to promptly report any unauthorised persons who interfere with ECG’s network to the nearest district office or the police.
The Ablekuma South MP on his part, was grateful to ECG for the swift intervention to find a permanent solution to the power reliability challenges that plagued the community.
He recounted the negative effects of the unstable power situation on economic activities and social life in the area.
Dr Vanderpuije cautioned the community members to desist from engaging in all forms of illegalities as that can lead to a rapid overload of the newly installed transformer and negate the gains of the new transformer installation.
He urged residents to report anyone engaged in illegal connection to ECG for correction and surcharge because the actions of such individuals will lead to long term problems for the entire community.
The Accra West region has eight operational districts namely, Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korle-Bu and Nsawam.
