Western Regional Chapter of AHRMPHG holds International Human Resource Day

The Western Region chapter of Association of Human Resource Management Practitioners in Health, Ghana (AHRMPHG) yesterday celebrated the International Human Resource Day at Fijai, in the Sekondi -Takoradi metropolis, on the theme: ‘Empower people to lead change.’

AHRMPHG, with the motto ‘HR! The most important resource,’’ used the event to highlight the critical role practitioners play in the changing dynamics and challenging health sector.

The Regional President, Stephen Kwaw Eliason, noted the theme reflected the role of HR in the demanding health environment beyond recruitment, payroll and compliance.

He called for strategic partnerships and building systems that enabled staff to take initiatives, innovate and lead transformation at every level.

“Today, we mark a significant milestone for us as professionals in the Western Region.  For the first time, we are coming together as one body across the Ghana Health Service, Teaching Hospitals, Ministry of Health, to celebrate our profession, reflect on our mandate and renew our commitment to people -centered management in the health sector,” Mr Eliason stated.

The success of any health system, he said rested on its people and argued that, it was the responsibility of HR professionals to ensure that policies were fairly applied, and for staff to perform at their best at the workplace.

In her keynote address, the Deputy Director, Human Resource, Ms Anna Awude, noted the theme empowered HR practitioners to lead change in their environment and achieve their dreams.

However, she argued, empowerment should come  with a  positive mindset aided  by self motivation,  careful updated of  records, strategic  planning  and success of workforce despite  limited  logistics, adding “ we need to take rest  when our body calls us.”

The HR practitioner at the facility, Ms Awude, said did not have authority to sanction a decision, but, carried the   blame anytime.

“Stay out of trouble. We do not want to be surcharged for things that we did not play any role or we have not taken any money. I still go to Public Accounts Committee,” she advised.

The Deputy Director Administration, Jeremiah Tiimob, who chaired the event, commended Ms Awude and her team for organising the programme, as part of efforts to project the HR function and the invaluable role it played in the health sector.

The HR day, he believed, was a platform to foster unity, sharing of ideas, and to learn about new developments, and even beyond, so that we can stay on top of issues and make our contribution on the national discourse concerning health policy and HR policies.

“HR has become a strategic partner in every organisation, and no organisation can thrive without HR. Most of the literature indicates that HR is the most important asset of the organisation. We need to enhance the HR system and ensure we increase productivity,” Mr Tiimob added.
