3 teacher unions suspend nationwide strike, resume classes

The three teacher unions that embarked on an industrial action to press home their demands over aspects of their collective agreement have suspended their nationwide strike.

The unions have directed their members to return to the classrooms today, October 12, 2026, following renewed negotiations with the government.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) took the decision after a series of engagements with the Council of State, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment on Friday.

The suspension is expected to end the disruption to teaching and learning caused by the strike and pave the way for the resumption of academic activities in basic and second-cycle institutions.

The unions embarked on the industrial action over outstanding concerns relating to their collective agreement, deprived area allowances and delays in the payment of promotion-related entitlements.

The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, said considerable progress had been made in addressing the issues that triggered the strike. Read More.
