Mahama eyes Russia partnership to expand Ghana’s energy sources

President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana is looking to strengthen its energy partnership with Russia, particularly in solar and nuclear power, as part of efforts to diversify the country’s energy sources.

He expressed optimism that his planned bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin would open up new areas of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in energy, investment and economic development.

Speaking during his visit to Russia, President Mahama described the relationship between Ghana and Russia as historic and called for efforts to restore it to its former strength.

He explained that the planned meeting with President Putin would provide an opportunity for both countries to explore areas of mutual interest and deepen their bilateral relations.

“Ghana is one of the leading producers of power. We export power to Togo, Burkina Faso and Benin, and we exchange power with Côte d’Ivoire,” he stated.

President Mahama noted that Ghana was exploring alternative energy sources, including solar power, while considering nuclear energy as an additional source of electricity.

He expressed confidence in Russia’s technological capabilities in these areas, adding that closer cooperation could help Ghana explore new opportunities in the energy sector.

He further indicated that the expected outcome of the bilateral meeting would strengthen relations between the two countries, particularly in attracting investments and expanding economic cooperation.
