Police foil gold stealing attempt at Newmont

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has restored calm to Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region following an attempted breach of security at the New­mont mining site by some persons who alleged attempted to steal gold on the night of Wednesday.

According to the service, during the operation to contain the situation, the police con­fronted the suspects, leading to the death of three persons and injuries to four others.

This was contained in press statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs of GPS, Grace Ansah –Akrofi, and copied to the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

The statement said the In­spector-General of Police, (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, by phone, worked with the Regional Police team to engage community leaders and the youth throughout the night.

To stabilise the situation, it said the IGP engaged with relevant security personnels till yesterday morning and that there had been no reprisal attacks or escalation of the situation in the community.

“A special investigation team from Accra has been sent to the area to investigate the incident, whilst a reinforcement team has also been sent to the community to help ensure peace, security, law and order,”the statement revealed.

It also said the police had re­ceived information that the three deceased victims were Muslims, and the due process of the law was being followed for the bodies to be released to their families for burial later in the day.

“We urge the public to remain calm as the police continue to work to ensure law and order prevail,” the statement said.
