Aburi Girls SHS excel in inaugural Diaspora Open Taekwondo Championship

The maiden Diaspora Open Taekwondo Championship has ended at the Korea Sports Complex in Tema with over 200 athletes taking part in the event that lasted for two days.
Players took part in Kyorugi seniors, juniors, cadet and para as fans appeared thrilled by the movements of the team poomsae and exceptional individual freestyle poomsae.
The participants were drawn from Ghana, Niger, Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria.
Ghana’s Joel Amanor and Henrietta Armah emerged gold medal winners in the Poomsae freestyle and senior’s category respectively as the latter climaxed her day with the best athlete award.
St Mary’s International School in Ashaiman was the club with most participants and Integrete Taekwondo Club from Niger emerging the best club.
Mohammed Sherif defeated Lawrence Tweasam in an entertaining final to win gold of the -68kg.
Zeinab Hamadataher from Niger wowed the organisers in the -49Kg, won silver after losing to Henrietta Armah.
Forty-year old Zeina Adamu won bronze in the seniors -65Kg category.
The Aburi Girls SHS Taekwondo Club had three students – Woyram Aseye Kwawukume (-63Kg), Woye Nana Boison (+65) and Pamela Gumah (+65) winning bronze and gold medals with the latter also winning the best female athlete in the junior’s category.
The President of the Diasporans, Mr Charles Tsibo Cromwell, who happens to be the Vice President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF), said next year’s event will be exceptional despite the challenges encountered.
“I was thrilled by the young ones and the upcoming talents. This gives me hope in the upcoming African Games, and I believe Ghana will bring a lot of medals as far as taekwondo is concerned,” he said.
