Ghana shines at JE Wilson Ghana Junior Int’l Badminton Championships

Team Ghana put up a spectacular showing, bringing home two gold medals, one silver, and two bronze medals at the just ended JE Wilson Ghana Junior International 2025 U-19 Badminton Championships held on Sunday at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
The final day featured five thrilling matches, including the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
Having swept five out of six gold medals at the U-15 level days earlier, Team Ghana was looking to replicate that feat; however, they found Nigeria to be a tough opponent.
The duo of Moslena Ama Koramah Adu and Rachael Quarcoo started the day on a positive note for Ghana, delivering a stellar performance in the women’s doubles finals as they secured a commanding victory over the Egyptian duo of Karma Elghandour and Salma Salah Edin to claim gold.
National champion, Obapomba Adu Mintahm and his twin sister, Moslena Ama Koramah Adu, triumphed over compatriots, Francis Obeng and Rachael Quarcoo, in an all-Ghanaian final in the mixed doubles event.
Team Ghana’s performance hit a snag in the men’s doubles when Melchizedek Takyi Adu and Nathaniel Abeka Kwaw fell to the Nigerian duo of Saidu Aliyu and Aderinola Samuel.
This was after Aliyu, who had defeated Ghana’s Takyi in the singles semi-final, overcame his compatriot, Samuel, in a hard-fought match to claim gold.
The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Richard Akpokavi, who was the special guest of honour, congratulated the Ghana Badminton Federation (GBF) for organising an excellent event.
He praised the rapid growth of badminton in the country, attributing it to the sound leadership at the helm of the sport, and encouraged them to use this success as a stepping stone for future achievements.
“Watching these young athletes compete at such a high level is truly inspiring; it proves that with continued hard work and the right investment, Ghana will not be far from Olympic success,” he stated.
GBF President, Mr Evans Yeboah, while commending Team Ghana’s exceptional performances throughout the tournament, praised the challenges posed by players from participating countries, adding that the future of the sport on the continent looks very bright.
